Watchers

Well things are barreling ahead, and it's exciting.  Without a doubt my luck has changed... I went from being dead broke to being worth over a million dollars in only 8 years. I still feel poor and live modestly though. We live in a trailer home, and drive an F-150, often working 90hours a week for very little take home pay. I've always been generous, and charitable to my friends and Shire.

Never have we had help or a handout, we are the opposite of the Occupy crowd...we thrive DESPITE the governments interference, Earned what we have, and proved hard work and intelligence are ALL you need to make it in America. We never graduated from college, but instead got our Masters degree in life investing in our marriage, business and hobbies.

Life's going good.  In 5 years I'll have a Medieval Manor in Bozeman, and the Castle Tortosa outside Bozeman (in Three-forks) will be complete.  I'm not building the castle for me..it's for my Shire, and to reinvigorate medievalism in my state. They will have a small village and "Tavern" to hold events that will be better than they ever imagined, and in town we will hold events in my Manorhouse in Bozeman.  I've done the 40 yrs of poverty so I feel I deserve to be rich now.

I'm an arrogant man who knows his limitations and strengths. I like outdoing others...it's a horrible personality flaw but I do enjoy it. Taking a project just a level above others drives others to do better as well. I've done it as an artist, as a businessmen and even as a medievalist.

I'm success driven, and don't waste my time (My wife always comes first). I devote a lot of time to Medievalism, as it's my hobby...but I manage it carefully and thoughtfully.

As a leader I was never suited to be a squire, often leading to problems with my Knight. He found me to be a know-it-all snot-nosed kid, but soon made me the households mercenary Captain while my brother was head squire...in time I became head squire as well but no longer seen myself as some shield-man and more of a Independent force.

My knight expected much, and I just did not have the time.  I've seen SCA Knights spend years to get the white belt and even more time and money trying to become "King". Honestly I realized in my 20's that I'd never have the time or dedication to be a Knight...so I decided to become the Lord they serve.  I did this by earning wealth, earning lands, getting a castle,  a manor, etc.

I was "Granted" Tortosa at Pennsic but we Earned it. We bought  the land, did the research and assembled a team.  After 26 yrs of courts in school lunchrooms and public halls I need to bring my dream to fruition and take the hobby to the next level.  I know of many medieval projects that failed before but that's because they were non-business types that just did not have the life skills to do this...but I do.

We are going to earn a million dollars over the next couple of years by hard work and brilliant thinking and get this stuff done. I want to get my Shirefolk playing again and see what happens when they become a village. So far everyones reenergized as now they know theres a goal ahead that's important, that will be theirs.

New skills will begin a Bozeman renaissance medievally speaking that I hope will inspire my Kingdom of Artemisia and broader SCA to do likewise.

Reality
My wife and I own our own company and own a few of pieces of property in Bozeman where we live. Our store can be found on Main Street and I live a modest life while I'm not medieval.

I'm an artist and a gamer and look to soon publish some RPG supplements in the near future. I make a very good living so making a profit in the publishing industry is unimportant, it's more of a labor of love than anything else.

I'm developed my own style I'll get a drawing to where I basically want, make copies and experiment adding on so as not to destroy my progress, scanning and re-scanning as I add layers. It adds depth and eases my nerves.

I see art as a way of life, I sculpt and carve stone, plaster, clay, wood and whatever can be worked. I draw and paint. Most of my painting is using medieval methods with egg tempera paints that I make.

I carve soapstone molds to cast pewter jewelry, buckles, pilgrims badges and other medieval and RPG themed items.

I also cast replica's of my original statues in plaster using latex molds.

I'm a carpenter, I make furniture and can pretty much build anything given the time. Most of what I make is for medievalism in the SCA.

I joined the SCA in 1986 and have played with both the SCA and MSR (the Kingdom of Acre, an Ally at Pennsic with the East Kingdom).

My wife and I have been together since 1989 and got Married at Pennsic in 95. We have two dogs and a cat.

In the SCA I'm Prior Helmut, it's the persona I portray in medieval reenactment.

Persona (SCA persona) (The fictional character I portray)

Prior Helmut, is a Templar monk circa 1250AD who is stationed in Tortosa, Syria during the crusades within the Outremer. Well not just stationed, he is the lord of it.

Helmut is a lord in the Kingdom of Artemisia, a landed lord in the Kingdom of Acre (on the Island of Kyrenia in the Outremer, and Tyre also a crusader city and in the Kingdom of Drachenwald (500 Acre lease in the Black Forest). At Pennsic 39, He was granted the City of Tortosa.

Helmut is the medieval equivalent to a land magnate, and a member of the Church (quite common then).

In our Shire of Silverkeep he owns a few estates, including the future (reenactment) village of Tortosa where he will build his Priory.

Without a doubt Helmut is one of the most landed Monks out there, and has donated part of his lands to the Order ( but he secretly keeps most to himself).

Prior Helmut is a Vidame to a Bishop ( Bishop Francesco Gaetano Greco d'Edessa in the East Kingdom) as well and enjoys the luxury that position grants him. Perhaps stretching his vows of poverty a bit thin, but " the riches of the Church belong to the pious"...
He has a misunderstanding of his vows of poverty (as part of his motivation joining the Church was greed) but pious in his own way.

Helmut (unlike myself) was born with a golden spoon in his mouth, and has issues with poverty finding it "repellant and rife with greed and sin" so to fight it he secretly surrounds himself with wealth keeping only an illusion of proper behavior. If other monks have issues well Templars do disappear in the Outremer...

Prior Helmut is the third son of Sir Vincenzo, the Baron of Tyre. His family influences and personal maneuvering granted him the "right" to sell Holy Relics, said to be true by the Patriarch of Antioch. (Sure those finger bones of saints might look like chicken bones but you can trust the good Prior, he sold three heads of John the Baptist...that's a miracle .)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Prior Helmut is the Father Confessor to Master Wulfgar, Lady Rozalija, and Brother Robin..
Duchess Arrowyn is the Patroness to his Order in the Kingdom of Artemisia. Bishop Francesco Gaetano Greco d'Edessa is Ecclesiastical Patron.
King Damon signed the Templars charter with the Prior at the Pennsic War.
